As we move into May and the weather warms up across Michigan, homeowners are shifting into summer mode — prepping the backyard, planning vacations, and spending more time outdoors. But before you fire up the grill or head up north, it’s worth taking a few simple steps to make sure your home’s plumbing is ready for the season.

From increased water usage to sudden summer storms, the warmer months can bring unexpected strain on your plumbing system. At Triton Plumbing, we want to help you stay ahead of problems and enjoy a worry-free summer. Here are six practical tips to prepare your home’s plumbing for the months ahead:

1. Make Sure Your Sump Pump Is Ready for Summer Storms

Michigan’s weather can be unpredictable, and even into early summer, heavy rainfall isn’t uncommon. A sump pump is your home’s best defense against basement flooding — but only if it’s working properly.

Test it by pouring a few gallons of water into the sump pit. It should kick on, pump out the water, and shut off smoothly. If it doesn’t activate or makes strange noises, give us a call. A quick maintenance check now can save you thousands in water damage later.

Bonus Tip: Consider adding a water-fed or battery backup system to your sump pump in case of a power outage during a storm.

2. Check Outdoor Faucets and Sprinkler Connections

After a long Michigan winter, it’s common for outdoor faucets and hose bibs to crack or loosen — especially if they weren’t winterized properly. Turn each faucet on and inspect for leaks or drips. If the water pressure seems low, it could indicate a broken pipe inside the wall.

This is also a good time to hook up and test your garden hoses and sprinkler systems. Addressing any leaks early prevents wasted water and higher bills.

3. Flush Your Water Heater for Better Efficiency

Sediment naturally builds up in water heaters over time, especially in areas with hard water (like many parts of Metro Detroit). This buildup can reduce your heater’s efficiency, shorten its lifespan, and even cause rumbling or banging noises.

We only recommend to start flushing your water heater if its is 1 -3 years old. Older water heaters may already have sediment build up which could cause issues if you start flushing it. If your water heater is relatively new, we recommend flushing it once a year — spring is a great time to do it. If your unit is over 10 years old or not heating as well as it used to, we can help assess whether repair or replacement is the better option. (Flushing water heaters is an option in our maintenance agreements too)— spring is a great time to do it. 4. Do a Whole-Home Leak Check

The shift from cold to warm weather can put stress on plumbing joints, pipes, and seals. Take a few minutes to check under your kitchen and bathroom sinks, around your water heater, and behind appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine.

Look for moisture, water stains, or signs of mold. Even small leaks can lead to major damage if left unattended — and summer humidity can make things worse. If you’re not sure what you’re seeing, we’re happy to take a look.

5. Know Where Your Water Shut-Off Valve Is — Especially Before Traveling

Planning a summer vacation or weekend away? One of the most important plumbing tips we can offer is knowing where your main water shut-off valve is and making sure it is in good working order. Most people have never touched this valve which in an emergency could result in a stuck valve that wont open or close. We can show you if your valve is operational or if it needs replacement. This way, if something goes wrong while you're gone — like a pipe bursting — shutting off the water quickly can prevent serious damage.

We also recommend turning off your water before leaving for extended periods. It’s a small step that can bring major peace of mind.

6. Schedule a Plumbing Inspection Before Summer Projects

Thinking about installing a new outdoor sink, updating your bathroom, or expanding your patio area? Summer is a popular time for home upgrades — and plumbing often plays a bigger role than expected.

A pre-project plumbing inspection helps ensure everything is up to code and ready for the work ahead. At Triton Plumbing, we work with homeowners and contractors to make sure plumbing doesn’t hold up your project timeline.
